Nuclear Medicine Preparation
No preparation is required. You will receive an injection (in the arm) and return in 2-4 hours for the exam.
Thyroid-Uptake & Scan; Thyroid Therapy
No food for 3 hours prior to the exam. You can have liquids, but you should avoid foods known to contain iodine (seafood, sushi, seaweed, iodized salt) on the day of your exam. You will receive a capsule in the morning and return 6 hours later for the scan. If you are on thyroid medications, you must be off of them for 6-8 weeks prior to the exam. You will be asked to verify that you have not had any iodine contrast in the past 4 weeks. Please contact RDC for exact timeframe as this may vary for different medications.
Liver/Spleen, GI Bleed Scan, Gastric Emptying Scan, Liver Spect
No Barium studies for 48 hours prior to the scan. Nothing by mouth (food or liquids, etc.) after midnight. Patients should withhold all opiates or prokinetic agents, which effect gastrointestinal motility for 48 hours. These include metoclopramide (Reglan), domperidone (Motilium) and erythromycin (Ery-Tab).
No food or drink for 8 hours prior to the exam.
Myocardial Perfusion Test with Lexiscan
No food or drink for 4 hours prior to the test. No caffeine or smoking for 24 hours prior to the test. No steroids or Viagra for 48 hours prior to the test. Patient is to wear loose fitting clothing for the exam.
